Just FYI, despite being made of HDPE #2, Homer buckets are not food-safe (probably down to the dye used, or just CYA since they get them from multiple suppliers). I doubt there is all that much risk (tons of people use them that way despite the warning), but if you want to be sure, get the white food-safe buckets instead. They are only a dollar more, which is cheap insurance IMO.

With the first batch I tried to not crush them too fine to avoid astringency/tannins, and ended up with lot of malt being not crushed at all which resulted in poor efficiency. For the second batch I almost pulverized them and had lot better efficiency. There was an xbmt which indicated that fine crush shouldn't be a problem. 2 Continue this thread

What techniques and equipment do you employ to condition grain before the crush? The squirt bottle technique sounds a little laborious and error prone.

Crushing Grains In brewing with barley malt the usual advice is to just crush it enough to crack open the grain, exposing the starch and leaving the husk intact to form the filter bed in lautering. With gluten free brewing the advice is a bit different as the grains do not have a husk, although some do have a thin hull.

Containers with new seals should be stored in them so that the seals are airtight and don't let bugs in. By freezing your grain, you can ensure that nothing remains in it and that you can eat it away from it.
