
The Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is situated in the village of Skinningrove, a five minute walk from the coast. The museum is unique as it is based within original mine buildings and the visitor is given a guided tour of the site which concludes with a demonstration of ironstone mining of the Victorian period.

17/12/2019There was a substantial Iron Age hill fort at Eston Nab. Boulder walls and ditches are still visible even though they were built in around 700 BC. Eston Hills, of which it is the highest point, had a warren of cavernous tunnels carved into them, to create the ironstone mines that closed in 1949.

One hidden factor in these figures is that the percentage of women over 20 working rose from 9% in 1851 to 18% in 1861.
